Welcome to the launching of our first
electronic newsletter, Med Management. Several years ago we produced a newsletter
which was mailed to our clients on a quarterly basis. It was very
well received but became cost prohibitive. With electronic capabilities
expanding through our website, www.osullivanconsult.com, we will be able to offer information,
links and articles on the operations and management of a medical
practice.
O'Sullivan
Consulting Group will be introducing new services as well as expanding
on some of our existing services. These services have been developed
with our clients needs in mind. For instance, we get many requests
for information on reimbursement, contracting and personnel forms.
The eventual goal of the website is to introduce a "membership"
which will offer enhanced access to information just by logging
onto the O'Sullivan Consulting Group website.

Have you ever wondered why credentialing
can be so complicated? If so, you are definitely not alone.
For physicians and office administrators, credentialing is
a necessary evil in order to participate with managed care plans.
How and when it is done can be the difference between insurance
claims payments or denials.
Managed
care organizations such as health maintenance organizations (HMOs)
and preferred provider organizations (PPOs) must successfully select
and retain health care providers who will provide quality services
to their subscribers. This
process of selection and retention is known as credentialing.

Hiring staff is not only time consuming, but can also negatively impact resources-people and money. First,
there is the entire hiring process, interviewing, background
and reference checks all which can be draining. Then, once the new
employee starts there is orientation, training and in some cases
a 90-day evaluation. Then,
what if that person doesn't work out? We get to start the process
all over again.
How can we ensure to streamline
the process but improve the quality of new hire decisions?
First, a written job description is
a must. If the new hire is
to replace an existing position, has the job description been reviewed
and updated? The job description should clearly identify tasks,
level of responsibilities and any required skills, such as a "working
knowledge of
Excel or Word." Listed below are the
steps in the hiring process we have found to be
effective.
